KK singer cremated in the presence of his family and friends
Playback singer Krishnakumar Kunnath, better known by his stage name KK, was cremated in the presence of his family and close friends from the film fraternity.
The popular singer’s last rites were held at Versova Hindu Crematorium in Mumbai around 2pm, just a kilometer from his home in the Park Plaza apartment.
The 53-year-old singer died in Kolkata on Tuesday night shortly after performing at a concert, leaving the industry and his fans in shock.
An ambulance adorned with flowers and a photo of KK transported the singer’s body to the crematorium.
The last rites were performed by KK’s son, Nakul, who looked inconsolable.
The 53-year-old singer’s filmmaker friend Vishal Bhardwaj along with his wife Rekha, filmmaker Ashoke Pandit, Javed Akhtar, Shankar Mahadevan, Udit Narayan, Abhijeet Bhattarcharya and others attended the funeral.
Musicians like Shreya Ghoshal, Salim Merchant, Alka Yagnik, Rahul Vaidya, Javed Ali, Papon, Shantanu Moitra and Sudesh Bhosale paid tribute to the singer at his residence.
“It’s a big loss. The whole industry is in shock. He had no health issues as such during the few days he had an acid problem,” Bhattarcharya told reporters. in front of KK’s residence.
On Wednesday, the West Bengal government fired a salute in honor of the singer. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee paid her floral tributes.
His body was taken to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport for transfer to his residence in Mumbai.
KK, considered one of the best singers, had no formal training in music but became one of the most popular singers of the late 90s and 2000s right after his debut with the movie ” Maachis” directed by Gulzar in 1996.
It was singer Hariharan who encouraged KK to travel to Mumbai after hearing his singing in Delhi. They then worked on the track Chhod Aaye Hum Woh Galiyaan’ composed by Vishal Bhardwaj, which also featured Suresh Wadkar and Vinod Sehgal.
KK is mostly considered for his work in Hindi but he has also sung memorable movie tracks in other languages like Tamil, Telugu, Bengali.
He has lent his voice to actors such as Shah Rukh Khan, Emraan Hashmi, Salman Khan, Hrithik Roshan, R Madhavan, Vivek Oberoi and Ranbir Kapoor among others.
