Yrma Lydya, the 21-year-old singer who was shot dead by her 79-year-old lawyer husband, had been trying to divorce her for two months before he killed her in a restaurant in Mexico City.

Lydya was dining at Suntory, a Japanese restaurant in the Benito Juárez neighborhood of the Mexican capital, when Jesús Hernández shot her dead in a private room last Thursday.

Hernández and his bodyguard, Benjamin Hernández, were arrested at the restaurant as they attempted to flee.

Jesús Hernández allegedly tried to bribe the police officers who had arrested him to let him go.

Mexican newspaper Excelsior reported that the folk music artist contacted a well-known law firm in Mexico City in April to begin divorce proceedings following a series of domestic violence incidents, providing photos of his bruised face as evidence.

Lydya filed a complaint with the police after Hernández beat her in December 2021. He also threatened her with a gun on another occasion.

Despite the violent episodes, Lydya decided to give her marriage a second chance.

It is not known how long Lydya was married to Jesús Hernández.

Mexico City security chief Omar García Harfuch told the Milenio news network that Jesús Hernández met two people at the restaurant at 2 p.m. Thursday. They left the restaurant around 6 p.m. before Lydya arrived.

A witness told the Univision Primer Impacto news magazine that Jesús Hernández shot Lydya at close range. The third shot he fired hit his wife’s head.

The person asked for help from a policeman who was in the restaurant and managed to hold the lawyer.

Lydya was scheduled to perform at a concert in Glendale, California on Saturday.

The show was part of Grandiosas 12, a concert series in Mexico and the United States that brings together well-known singers from Central and South America.

Jesús Hernández and Benjamin Hernández both appeared in court on Sunday and have been remanded in a Mexico City jail while authorities continue the investigation.

Jesús Hernández’s request to be placed under house arrest due to his age was denied by a judge during the hearing.

He pleaded not guilty and told the court that he did not kill Lydya.

He is expected to appear in court on Thursday.
